The lack of recognition at work is not to be taken lightly. It can make the bed burn-out, or professional exhaustion.
- In France, 80,000 people are said to be in psychological distress at work and burnout concerns 7% of them, or 30,000; according to the Institute for Health Surveillance.
- Very often, the lack of recognition at work is linked to a lack of communication.
If the professional activity helps to be accomplished, it is because it must bring a form of recognition to give meaning to one’s efforts. When this is not the case, it is often due to a lack of communication.
How do you know if your work is valued?
If colleagues or superiors do not clearly communicate their recognition, several clues and behaviors make it possible to know indirectly what they think:
– the responsibilities and autonomy entrusted to you as a sign of appreciation for your work.
– consideration of your opinion and your skills.
– direct communication without going through an intermediary.
Remember that a boss doesn’t always compliment his employees directly, but his demeanor and the way he expresses his confidence most often shows his appreciation.
What if you lack recognition?
If, despite all your efforts, you do not find any value in your professional activity, do not hesitate to talk about it either through a meeting to evaluate your work, or by asking your superior directly how you can improve.
Do not hesitate to specialize in a skill, help your colleagues whenever they need it, and get to know your collaborators well to avoid isolation.
