Private clinic or hospital, the costs and operations performed vary from simple to double. This is what a report shows, which identifies day surgery as a source of savings.
In a report published Monday, the Technical Agency for Information on Hospitalization (ATIH) assesses the costs of medical care in hospitals and clinics. She also compares outpatient surgery and conventional surgery. Unsurprisingly, outpatient operations make it possible to relax the budgets of health establishments. On the other hand, it emerges from this study that a stay in a public hospital would be twice as expensive as in a clinic.
Private-public disparities
The ATIH survey covered 36 public establishments, 10 private non-profit establishments and 24 clinics. It took into account in its calculations several factors, including the cost of operation of the establishment, the cost of staff, but also the fees of the liberal doctors who work there, and the difference between the acts of outpatient and conventional surgery. We can first of all note that the costs of care, all establishments combined, have stagnated since 2010, with a slight drop of 0.8% in 2011.
But if we look in detail, the differences between these establishments are notable. Thus, the average cost of treatment at the hospital is 2,115 euros, ranging from 575 euros, for dialysis or a chemotherapy session, to 4,564 euros for a complex surgical operation. In clinics, this average cost is 1,204 euros, with operations ranging from 449 to 1,910 euros.
The ambulatory bet
Currently, clinics provide nearly 70% of outpatient stays, which could explain the lower costs. Especially in the hospital, an outpatient operation can cost between 611 and 5,120 euros, while in the clinic, this support can be costed between 385 and 2,200 euros.
The most common outpatient surgeries at both types of facilities are wisdom tooth extraction, cataract surgery, and meniscus removal, all of which cost between $ 700 and $ 1,400 depending on the complexity of the procedure. , and again, depending on whether you are in a clinic or in a hospital.
Finally, the report underlines that the numerous chemotherapy sessions performed in France each year weigh particularly heavily on French health establishments. Thus, in 2012, 1.45 million chemotherapy sessions were performed in the hospital, with an average cost of 922 euros. For the clinics, 700,000 sessions at 800 euros were recorded. An expensive treatment therefore, but essential for the sick.
