In France, nearly 30% of anesthesia-intensive care positions are vacant in public hospitals. And this observation made by the National Management Center is not about to improve.
Anesthetists are increasingly deserting French public hospitals! The statutory vacancy rate observed by the National Management Center (1) among anesthesiologists hospital practitioners (PH) full-time, in fact reaches 29.5% 1st January 2014. This rate even climbs to 56.1% for part-time hospital practitioners.
Young people attracted to the private sector
In this report that was obtained The Doctor’s Daily, the figures also show that some regions are more affected than others. This is the case, for example, of Lower Normandy, but also of‘Ile-de-France.
This finding is general, however, “because most CHU are barely, in competition with the private sector, with more attractive incomes, ”specifies this daily. According to recent studies, it is true that young anesthesiologists can earn up to four times more than in the general public. Another competition is that of hospitals on the outskirts of university towns, “where working conditions are sometimes better, and practitioners, more recognized. “
Foreign doctors ease tensions
This finding astonishes the CNG all the more as the number of internship positions open in anesthesia-intensive care rose from 243 to 410 between 2004 and 2012. Worse still for public hospitals, this situation would not be about to end. ‘improve because an anesthetists’ demographic dip is looming until 2020.
Two thousand retirements are in fact expected, i.e. 44% of the anesthesiologists, over the period 2009-2020 (source CNG).
Fortunately, doctors with foreign degrees sometimes ease tensions in certain establishments. The replacements too. Unfortunately, these are often temporary workers, paid between 650 and 1,500 euros the day. Tariffs four to five times higher than the cost of a holder and which lead to the accounts of certain French public hospitals.
