42 cases of penile fracture
To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied 42 cases of penile fracture requiring a visit to the emergency room. The patients were questioned about their symptoms, the course of the trauma and the sexual position in which they were at the time of the events.
In addition to data on sexual positions, scientists found that heterosexual intercourse was the most common cause of penile fracture (66.7% of observed injuries), followed by manipulation of the penis (14.3%), then by homosexual relations (9.5%).
What is a penile fracture?
A penile fracture is a rupture of the tunica albuginea and the corpora cavernosa of the penis. This rare accident occurs when abnormally great pressure is exerted on an erect penis, causing it to bend too much.
Imaging of the penis determines the fracture site. Treatment is most often surgical, consisting of evacuation of the hematoma followed by suturing of the tunica albuginea. Complications are possible such as erectile dysfunction, fistulas or urinary leakage.
