- Between 2014 and 2022, high temperatures and heat waves killed nearly 33,000 people in France.
- 23,000 deaths concerned people aged over 75.
- Each year, between 1,000 and 7,000 deaths are related to heat.
Nearly 33,000 deaths were caused by high temperatures and heat waves between 2014 and 2022 according to the new Public Health France report on the impact of heat on mortality in metropolitan France. These deaths were recorded each year, between June 1 and September 15. Of the nearly 33,000 identified, 23,000 concerned people over the age of 75.
Particularly deadly heat waves
We speak of a heat wave when there are very high temperatures day and night for at least three consecutive days. These periods are particularly deadly. In effect, “28% of recorded deaths were observed during heat waves as defined by the heat wave management plan, whereas they represent only 6% of the days studied, thus justifying particularly reinforced monitoring and prevention”.
The health authority points out that “the impact of the heat is not limited only to periods of heat wave but also to high temperatures throughout the summer.” A heat wave is an episode characterized by intense heat, of short duration or by high temperatures that persist over time. In France, we speak of a national heat wave when the national daily average temperature exceeds 25.3°C.
Protect yourself in the event of a heat wave and extreme heat
In its report, Santé Publique France recalls the importance of protecting yourself during high temperatures and periods of heat wave. “Over-exposure (related to the environment or physical activity), the inability to avoid exposure (for physical or medical reasons) and individual susceptibility (age, state of health, intake of certain drugs, etc.) are the main risk factors”, can we read in the report.
Obviously, it is recommended to be well hydrated throughout the day during heat waves and to avoid other drinks that give the illusion of drinking without hydrating. Avoid, if possible, going out, especially during the hottest hours. Outdoor sports or physical activity are also not recommended when it is very hot.
At home, the ideal is to close the shutters and windows during the day to keep it cool and to ventilate it at night. And, even if the heat suppresses the appetite, it is very important to eat well, especially in the elderly. If you have seniors over the age of 75 around you, visit them and/or call them often to hear from them during these difficult times.
