Recently, the WHO reported cases of people suffering from sudden hearing loss and tinnitus after receiving the coronavirus vaccine. The health authority has launched a “signal” to the laboratories.
- In France, 54,274,490 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 80.5% of the total population) and 53,363,515 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 79.1% of the total population).
- Tinnitus is the perception of sounds or auditory sensations (hissing, buzzing, crackling) that are not caused by outside noise.
Could the Covid-19 vaccine have an impact on our hearing? This was suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its latest pharmaceutical newsletter published on February 22. “Uppsala Monitoring Center (UMC) has identified hearing loss (including sudden cases) and tinnitus after coronavirus vaccination,” can we read in his press release.
37,529 cases of hearing loss and tinnitus after vaccination
According to the health authority, 37,529 people suffered from hearing loss and tinnitus after an injection of the Covid vaccine. The cases have been recorded in 10 countries. Most patients had no comorbidities. “Time to onset ranged from 0 to 19 days, with a median of one day. Based on well-documented cases, alternative causes have not been identified for most patients, although some may have had contributing morbidities (e.g., allergies, high blood pressure, previous hearing loss, autoimmune disorders), WHO said.
According to the UN organization, the most common symptoms were tinnitus, followed by headache, dizziness and nausea. “Many patients were cured quickly, while some required steroid treatment. A mechanism involving the vestibulocochlear nerve has been hypothesized,” specified the health authority, which decided to keep the reported cases under surveillance.
A “signal” to pharmaceutical companies
After examining the cases of patients suffering from hearing loss and tinnitus after the vaccine, the WHO decided to issue a “signal” to the pharmaceutical companies. This “signal” is defined as being a relationship between a drug and an effect, this relationship being, to date, unknown or undocumented.
“Knowledge of this possible link can help healthcare professionals and vaccine recipients monitor symptoms and seek treatment, if needed. As there are still only limited data in research providing evidence for this link, further monitoring is required”, said the UN organization.
