A Briton recently had some pleasing news … but above all surprising! While he dreaded a lung cancer, the 47-year-old learned that a toy was actually lodged in his airways. His doctors detailed this one-of-a-kind case in a item appeared in the British Medical Journal Case Reports.
A Playmobil beacon cone in the lungs
The story begins when this Briton, worried about his health, decides to consult specialists. And for good reason: a long-time smoker, he has been coughing for over a year. Doctors decide to do a CT scan, and find a mass on his lungs. Suspecting cancer, specialists then gave him a bronchoscopy. And there, surprise: they discover that this mass is not a tumor but … a toy !
How did this object, a Playmobil beacon cone, end up in his airways? The patient then remembers that he regularly ingested his toys as a child. He also remembered receiving a Playmobil cone as a gift on his seventh birthday. Once the astonishment passed, the doctors removed the object, using biopsy forceps. Four months after the procedure, the cough of the patient has almost entirely disappeared. If the ingestion of small objects is quite common in children, “a case where the onset of symptoms occurs so long after ingestion is unprecedented in the scientific literature”, underline the doctors.
