Gynecologists believe that men should be informed about thermal contraception and vasectomy.
- Men need to be better informed about male contraception, according to the FNCG.
- Today, it is possible for men to resort to so-called “thermal” contraception or vasectomy.
- The subject of male contraception is increasingly discussed within couples.
On the occasion of the week of sexual health, the National Federation of Colleges of Medical Gynecology recalls the importance of raising awareness of the various contraceptive methods, particularly with regard to men.
Male contraception called “thermal”
“Men should be informed about so-called “thermal” male contraception, which consists of slightly increasing the temperature of the testicles through body heat using suitable underwear”, write the doctors in a joint press release. “Men also have the possibility of resorting to permanent contraception by sterilization, also called vasectomy”, experts say.
This highlighting of new means of male contraception by health professionals marks a clear change in mentalities on these issues, which are increasingly being addressed among French couples.
“While the pill remains the most widely used contraceptive method in France, there is however a disaffection of women for hormonal contraception, a consequence of the 2012-2013 controversy over new generation pills but also of certain intolerances to side effects”, also underlines the FNCG in this regard.
Non-hormonal contraception
Gynecologists therefore logically believe that it is also essential to make women aware of the wide variety of non-hormonal methods of contraception available to them: intrauterine device or IUD, diaphragm, spermicide, cervical cap, condom and natural methods. “At the same time, emergency contraception remains underused,” deplores Public Health France.
In France, one in three pregnancies is unplanned and 64% of them result in voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG).
