ANSES has withdrawn 132 products containing glyphosate associated with the co-formulant POE-Tallowamine due to identified health risks.
The hunt for glyphosate is entering its concrete phase. ANSES (National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) announced on Monday the withdrawal of 132 products combining the active substance glyphosate with the co-formulant POE-Tallowamine.
This decision follows the review of the marketing authorizations (MAs) for all products containing glyphosate. This reassessment, carried out by ANSES, was commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment. It aimed to ban products presenting a risk of concern to human health.
“Unacceptable risks”
However, during its research, ANSES identified “a point of concern concerning the co-formulants contained in glyphosate-based preparations, in particular POE-Tallowamine”, specifies a communicated. In its opinion dated February 2016, the agency warns of this identified risk.
“The absence of harmful effects on health and the environment is one of the conditions provided for under the European regulation (article 29) for the authorization of plant protection products,” specifies the agency. Since unacceptable risks, in particular for human health, cannot be excluded for these products, the conditions provided for in article 29 of the European regulation have not been verified ”.
As provided for in the European procedure, ANSES informed last April the holders of marketing authorizations for glyphosate-based products containing POE-Tallowamine of its intention to withdraw from the market, further specifies the agency.
By making these withdrawals, ANSES is ahead of Europe, entangled in endless debates around the reauthorization of glyphosate.
