Beyond physical appearance, it is important to have muscular buttocks for mobility, pelvic support and hip joint.
- Osteoarthritis of the hip is a wear then destruction of the cartilage of the joint located at the top of the thigh, between the femur and the pelvis.
- According to Health Insurance, only 3% of the population under 45 has osteoarthritis, 65% after 65 and 80% over 80.
Adults between the ages of 18 and 64 should engage in moderate-intensity or higher-intensity muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week. according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Among the muscle groups used, we must not forget the buttocks! Indeed, the muscles located in this area are very important.
Having muscular buttocks helps reduce lower back pain
Each person has three gluteal muscles: large, medium and small. The latter is the one closest to the hip. It is covered by the gluteus medius, itself included in the gluteus maximus. It is he who gives shape to our buttocks. First of all, these gluteal muscles are involved in general mobility, load bearing – and our own weight -, musculoskeletal health and the maintenance of good posture. They also make it possible to reduce and avoid certain pains, such as those in the lower back.
The gluteal muscles protect the hips
The gluteal muscles also protect the hip joint, absorbing shock and impact when a person falls or runs. And, if we can move our hips, it is partly thanks to these gluteal muscles.
When a person does not have enough muscle mass in the buttocks, it can have serious consequences. A study published in 2020 showed, for example, a link between the reduction in the size of these muscles and an increase in non-active tissues, such as fatty tissues. This could in particular explain certain pathologies of the hip.
Researchers have looked into osteoarthritis of the hip. In an other studythey explain that atrophy of the gluteal muscles, increased fatty tissue and lack of strength in the hips were linked in people with hip osteoarthritis.
Muscular buttocks: what sports are recommended?
To avoid hip problems and take care of your musculoskeletal health, it is important to strengthen your glutes. But how ? Some sports particularly require this part of the body. Among them, swimming, and in particular the backstroke which also has the advantage of maintaining the back, hips and legs.
Cycling, rollerblading, skiing and sliding sports in general also work on the thighs and glutes. Always outdoors, hiking and horseback riding are also recommended to strengthen the buttocks. Indoors, prefer step and dance to maintain this part of the body. Of course, on the muscle building side, squats are a must. Finally, on a daily basis, take the stairs rather than the elevators!
