We were previously able to tell you what the Playdate should cost, but now you could actually buy the device. Or via a pre-order. And guess what? The Playdate is very popular and sells well. 20,000 were sold within twenty minutes.
Playdate is selling like crazy
The manufacturer Panic promised to make 20,000 units in 2021. Well, they made it and sold them all. They sold the handhelds on a first come, first served basis. Do you want to buy another one now? That is possible, but your order will not arrive until somewhere in 2022. According to rumors, the first batch of 20,000 units was sold out within a good 20 minutes. The Next Web has this checked at Panic and they were able to confirm the numbers.
Launch
The launch did not go smoothly. There were some technical glitches. First there was the brief blink of server instability and 502 errors. Then the Panic cash register system came online. The plugin system they used to handle international shipping crashed. This has removed a number of international users from the checkout flow, so that they will not be able to receive the device until 2022.
The gaming handheld is the first device that panic makes. Playdate has a small black and white screen, two buttons and a four-point push button. Games can also be operated with a crank on the side. In the first season there are 24 games available. They don’t all come at once, but two of these games are put on the device every week. These do not cost any extra money.
