Half of penile fractures occur when the woman is placed on top of the man, according to a study.
The joys of coitus … and its disappointments. Certain sexual positions put the man in particular in danger. This would be the case with Andromache, the leading cause of penile fracture, according to a study published in the journal Advances in Urology.
“Misstep of coitus”
To reach this painful conclusion, the authors of the study analyzed the causes of this injury, dubbed “coitus misstep”. They analyzed thirteen years of data on patients treated in the emergency room of Campaninas, Brazil.
According to their work, it is when the woman is placed above the man that the couple takes the most risks. 50% of penile fractures would be due to the position of the Andromache, against 29% for the doggy style and 21% for the missionary.
Unexpected exit, strong comeback
“Our hypothesis is as follows: when the woman is on top, she controls the movement with the weight of her body which rests entirely on the erect penis, explain the scientists. She cannot stop the movement when the penis penetrates in the wrong way because the pain is usually weak in the woman in this case, while it is strong for the penis ”.
The accident is usually caused by an unexpected exit of the penis, followed by a sudden return. A situation that arises to a lesser extent, when the man is placed on top. “It controls movement and is therefore more likely to stop the energy of penetration in response to pain in the penis”, specify the authors.
“Crack”
Of the 44 cases identified, half said they had heard a “crack”, before feeling intense suffering accompanied by swelling of the penis in some. However, a considerable proportion of these patients waited up to six hours before seeking medical help.
This is because misadventure tends to generate embarrassment. “Penile fracture is a fairly rare clinical condition that often causes fear and embarrassment, scientists note. This can lead to slowing down the use of a doctor and lead to sexual deficiencies ”.
A rare accident
Yet, treated quickly, the fractured penis is recovering quite well. The term “torn” would also be more appropriate, since there is no bone in the penis. The injury consists of a rupture of the cavernous bodies, these erectile tissues located on the top of the penis which swell with blood during erection. It results in the formation of a hematoma and a deformation of the penis.
Drug treatment – anti-inflammatory and painkillers, preferably powerful – is sufficient for less serious cases. But surgery may be necessary for others.
Three quarters of the accidents identified in the study took place during heterosexual intercourse, against only four cases among same-sex couples. Six injuries are due to “manipulation of the penis”, and four to “unclear circumstances”.
The study falls rather badly for the French, who were numerous to plebiscite the position of the Andromache in a recent poll. That said, this accident remains relatively rare according to experts. Not enough, in any case, to frighten these gentlemen.
