Attention motorists! Nowadays, the police keep a close eye on what you are doing in the car. There are now also ‘smart cameras’ that monitor your behavior.
After a photo of the driver and the license plate has been recorded, a police officer assesses whether the camera has done well, the police report. The special speed cameras have been developed in such a way that they recognize drivers with a mobile phone, navigation system or tablet in hand. Holding an electronic device is therefore enough to get the penalty of 240 euros in the letterbox.
The cameras are not a substitute for police control of motorists. “Keeping attention to traffic is important. Distraction can have life-threatening consequences. There are still too many fatalities and injuries in traffic in general and due to distraction in particular,” said project leader Egbert-Jan van Hasselt.
