The Paca Regional Health Agency and the Var prefecture confirm a first indigenous case of dengue feverin the Var department. This disease is transmitted by the tiger mosquito, identifiable by its black and white stripes on the body.
We speak of an indigenous case when a person has contracted the disease on national territory and has not traveled to an area where the virus is circulating in the previous 15 days.
“This is currently a unique and geographically isolated case. The contaminated person consulted a doctor and his condition does not inspire any concern, ”said the ARS in a press release.
Following this first indigenous case, the Var department is placed in level 2 of the national anti-dissemination plan for chikungunya and dengue fever.
“To this end, the epidemiological (surveillance of other possible cases) and entomological (i.e. mosquito populations) surveillance measures provided for in the framework of the national anti-dissemination plan have been reinforced” recalls the Agency. . “And, mosquito control actions are also underway around the area of residence of the infected person”.
Recommendations to protect yourself from the tiger mosquito
the tiger mosquito tends to spread. In France, it is found in 34 departments, and it presents a risk of contamination in 18 of them, mainly in the south of France.
The tiger mosquito is an invasive species that thrives in urban and peri-urban areas. It colonizes vases, pots, cans, gutters and any other wet area at its disposal.
To protect against this, it is advisable to:
-regularly empty or even remove cups under flower pots and vases
-empty then return the buckets, garden equipment and put them away from the rain
– cover the water collection containers with a mosquito net
-to put fish in ornamental ponds (they will eat the larvae)
-change the water in the vases at least every 24 hours, over time it becomes a real culture broth, you can add a few drops of bleach.
