In 11 years, their number has fallen by more than 12%. The beds in the hospitals French people have indeed gone from 468,000 in 2003 to 411,000 in 2014. A worrying figure pointed out by the Department of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) in its P2016 anorama of healthcare establishments. Consequence: the majority of hospitalizations last less than a day and alternatives, such as hospitalization at home, are gaining ground.
Less space in short-stay hospitalization and psychiatry
Main sectors affected by this reduction of places:short-stay hospitalization and in psychiatry, marked by a regular closure of beds throughout these 11 years. In addition, only medium-stay reception capacities continued to increase, in particular for functional rehabilitation where 6,000 places were created between 2003 and 2014, according to the DREES. At the same time, the number of part-time hospital beds has increased significantly, from 18,000 short-stay part-time places in 2003 to 32,000 in 2014.
The drastic reduction in short-stay places worries the DREES because at the same time, the number of emergency roomclimbed. Thus, the annual number of visits to this service is increasing on average by 3% per year, from 10.1 million patients in 1996 to 19.7 million in 2014.
