In the United States, Burger King has withdrawn sodas from its children’s menus. From now on, they will have the choice between an apple juice, a glass of milk or a chocolate drink.
Burger King decided in mid-February to withdraw sugary drinks from its children’s menus since mid-February. In a press release published on Wednesday, the fast-food chain explains that it wants to offer children a “balanced nutritional choice”. From now on, they can accompany their fries with an apple juice, a chocolate drink or a glass of milk.
Improve the image of junk food
This decision by the world number 3 in fast food follows that of McDonald’s. For several years, the two competitors seem to want to improve the image of fast food restaurants by increasing the number of advertisements. Last week, for example, Mc Do indicated that he would no longer serve chickens on antibiotics.
The inventor of the “Whooper” is not at his first attempt. In 2013, he invented the light fries supposed to be 30% less fat and with 20% less calories than the classics. It was followed a few days later by Mc Do with diet menus. A light war that responds to growing consumer demand.
Dietetic resolutions
These initiatives have been welcomed by associations which fight for a healthy diet and which fight against pathologies linked to junk food such as obesity, diabetes or hypertension. In the United States, nearly two in three adults are obese and one in three children is obese or overweight.
These developments have not yet crossed the Atlantic and it is not known whether Burger King plans to test them in its French restaurants.
