More than 600 dead and at least 28,000 people infected: the Chinese coronavirus continues to sow panic around the world. Mainly present in Asia (China, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, etc.), the 2019-nCoV virus has not spared Europe, the United States and Australia: in France, 6 patients are currently at risk. ‘isolation.
An epidemic … of fake news. Of course, the Chinese coronavirus epidemic comes with its (inevitable) rumors. Thus, in January 2020, a little clever (?) Posted on Twitter an alleged “screenshot” of a 24-hour news channel: on the photo, we could read “Info alert: cocaine kills the coronavirus“A photo montage, of course.
Fennel, a medicinal vegetable … which can do nothing against the coronavirus
Another rumor, more insidious this one: this Monday, February 3, 2020, a user of the WhatsApp network claims that fennel would be “the” ideal drug to protect against (and even cure!) the Chinese coronavirus.
The message is circulating on Facebook: we can read that a “Brazilian infectious disease doctor“recommends 2 herbal teas of fennel per day to block the progression of the virus and prevent it from entering the body. And it is taken seriously: in Cape Verde (a string of islands that lie off the coast northwest of Africa), some market gardeners found themselves out of stock … of fennel!
Info or intox ? False info, of course: first, on its official website, the Ministry of Health explains that “To date, no specific treatment has been identified for this new coronavirus“. Deuzio, questioned by our colleagues from AFP, an official from the Institut Pasteur in Paris affirms that this rumor”not based on anything“. CQFD!
Fennel: a medicinal plant (after all). If it does not cure the coronavirus, fennel remains a vegetable with medicinal properties: traditional medicines recommend it for its digestive properties (an herbal tea at the end of a meal to stimulate digestion, limit bloating and relieve constipation), to soothe the ailments of menopause (it indeed contains phytoestrogens, such as soy) and even to fight against a hormonal pathology – hirsutism!
