According to a new South Korean study, a botox spray could limit or even stop excessive sweating.
Sweaty hands, halos under the armpits, soaked back,… Suffering from excessive sweating can really complicate life, especially in society. This phenomenon is explained by an overactivity of the sweat glands, which emit perspiration. If certain solutions exist – such as the use of specific deodorants, the prescription of drugs, even surgery – they are not suitable for everyone and can even lead to side effects.
Botox, already used to limit perspiration
A new treatment could be added to the list. South Korean researchers have indeed put developed a new technique, based on the use… of botox! The results of their study are published in the journal Skin Research Technology. In fact, botulinum toxin is already known to curb excessive sweating because it can block the nerves responsible for triggering sweat glands. However, the previous technique was tedious and painful: it was necessary to inject botox several times because the sweat glands are very numerous, and 1 centimeter under the skin.
A slightly painful technique
This time, the botox is administered in liquid form and by high pressure projection. In other words, thanks to a spray. The researchers used this technique on the palms and armpits of 20 participants. They observed a marked reduction, even a cessation of sweating, but it was not without pain. It was rated an average of 16 out of 100 on the armpits and 33 out of 100 on the palms by the patients. Other tests will have to be carried out, in particular on a larger sample, in order to confirm these promising results.
