The Eyeonearth.eu site reveals the degree of cleanliness of the beaches of the 27 Member States of the European Union, and also indicates the quality of water, soil, air and ozone in Europe.
The cleanliness of bathing water is a public health concern. Unsanitary water can lead to respiratory infections and stomach pains, “even serious illnesses such as dysentery, hepatitis and encephalitis”, specifies the EEA.
This observatory collects data from 21,000 monitoring points in Europe. For 18 countries, Internet users can discover the evolution of water quality over 18 years. “Countries such as Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Portugal and Slovakia will display data for 2008; other countries will update their information shortly”, announces the EEA .
According to Professor Geoffrey Lipman, spokesperson for the United Nations World Tourism Organization, “using this application people can find out what is happening on the beach near their home or the beach they have l intention to visit during the holidays”.
