Drink alcohol, why not, but in moderation! Because we know: this can lead to addiction and have health consequences. What we know less is that alcohol consumption, even moderate, can have an impact on our children: it would make them anxious and worried, according to one study of the British Institute for Alcohol Studies (IAS).
A real impact on children
To find out, an online survey was conducted among 1,000 parents and their children. These studies reveal that more than half of parents have already been tipsy in front of their children and that 29% have already been drunk. They are also 29% to think that it is acceptable to be drunk in front of its children, as long as it is not regular. Another story for children is that almost one in five says they feel embarrassed by their parents’ alcohol consumption. But that’s not all: when their parents drink alcohol, 11% of children say they are worried, 7% say their parents talk to them more than usual, 8% that they are unpredictable, 12% who ‘they pay little attention to them and 15% that they were put to bed earlier or later than usual.
Parents’ alcohol consumption therefore seems to have a real impact on children’s daily life. “They are exposed to a deluge of marketing messages that glamorize alcohol consumption (…) Parents find it difficult to teach children about the negative side of alcohol. We hope this study will guide parents who want to do so. informed choices about their own consumption in front of their children, ”concludes Katherine Brown, CEO of IAS.
