Since January 1, 2016, restaurants can offer their customers to take their leftovers in doggy bags. A system that tackles food waste
Box (box, editor’s note) anti-waste, gourmet bag or even TakeAway box… All these different names refer to the “doggy bag”: a box made available to customers by restaurant owners so that they leave with the rest of their meal.
Since 1er January 2016, all French restaurants can offer this device aimed at combating food waste. But this measure is not compulsory. Restaurant owners are free to offer this box or not.
While in Anglo-Saxon countries, bringing home the end of your meal is very common, France was quite reluctant to implement it. In addition, catering professionals feared legal action if the customer was the victim of food poisoning. “However, once the box is handed over to the consumer, restaurant owners cannot be held responsible,” underlines Nicolas Duval, co-founder of the Lyon start-up TakeAway, which produces anti-waste boxes.
500 restaurants offer it
Based on the legislation on bio-waste, the young company embarked on their design in 2014. “Our boxes are microwave-safe and can be put in the oven up to 150 ° C,” he describes. They are also completely waterproof and recyclable ”. To be able to market them, the company had to obtain a food certification called ANIA certification attesting that the packaging may be in contact with foodstuffs.
Hygiene precautions are also indicated on these boxes such as “keep refrigerated”, “consume within 24 hours” or “do not freeze food”.
For the moment, the TakeAway start-up has already sold more than 150,000 to 500 restaurants in France. And the order books are always full.
