Researchers at the University of Arizona wanted to understand the impact of divorce on health.
They measured the blood pressure of 138 people separated or divorced for 16 weeks and analyzed their quality of sleep for 7 years.
Divorce prevents sleep and increases blood pressure
The study finds that sleep problems due to divorce lead to an increase in arterial pressureand that the more the sleep disturbances increase, the more the volunteers have complications with their blood pressure.
“In the months following the separation, sleep problems are frequent and part of a normal adaptation process, but beyond 10 weeks they promote an increase in blood pressure, which in case of pressure already. moderate or moderately high should not be taken lightly, ”says David Sbarra, associate professor of psychology at the University of Arizona and co-author of the study.
Divorce is a stressful event. It must be considered with caution, and it is essential to do everything in place to limit its effects on the quality of sleep, stress and blood pressure. Sleep disorders are very often indicative of the stressful nature of a situation.
“Populations who poorly manage stressful events such as divorced, death or dismissal often loses sleep. They must find a solution as quickly as possible to stop this phenomenon because it is very bad for health and creates a vicious circle ”recalls David Sbarra.
Indeed, sleep disturbances are responsible for a lot of health problems and cardiovascular accidents. The quality of sleep and its duration are real factors of good health. Conversely, sleep deficiency can be responsible for car accidents, industrial disasters, metabolic disorders, and heart problems. In addition, people who lack sleep have a higher risk of developing chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, obesity, and cancer. They also experience increased mortality.
