What is an Ehpad exactly? Accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) welcome people over the age of 60 and are specialized in the care and medical support of seniors – we also speak of “nursing homes”. In France, the average age for entry into nursing homes is 85 years and the median length of stay is 2 years and 7 months.
In France, there are 8,000 nursing homes which can be public (44% of establishments), private (25%) or even associations (31%). It should be noted that some nursing homes are specialists in Alzheimer’s disease, others only welcome patients requiring long-term treatment, and still others accommodate seniors in a situation of strong dependence.
Monthly rent: around 1953 euros!
The median price for a room in a public or private nursing home is 1953 euros for 1 month. But there are strong regional disparities in prices: unsurprisingly, establishments in Île-de-France, Corsica and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur are the most expensive since they cost 2386 euros respectively, 2,277 euros and 1,860 euros per month on average.
The least expensive nursing homes are found in Pays de la Loire (1693 euros on average per month), in Brittany (1708 euros per month on average) and in New Aquitaine (1725 euros per month on average).
Obviously, demand is greatest in Île de France: the region accounts for 17.7% of housing demand. The regions best equipped with housing for seniors are Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie, which have 2,931 residences or 25% of EHPADs in France.
