The Île-de-France Regional Health Agency indicated that a first indigenous case of dengue fever was recorded in the Ile-de-France region.
- An indigenous case of dengue fever has been detected in Île-de-France. This is a person residing in Limeil-Brévannes (94).
- We speak of an indigenous case when the person contracts the disease without having traveled to an endemic area in the 15 days preceding the appearance of symptoms.
- Two successive mosquito control campaigns are carried out in Limeil-Brévannes.
At the beginning of October, the WHO warned against “the extra pressure” what could dengue cause “in the future in many large cities” of Europe. Endemic in tropical countries, infection due to dengue virus (DENV) and transmitted by mosquito bites tigers, is actually starting to become more present on our continent. L’ARS island-de-France revealed in a press release published on October 17 that a first case of dengue fever was identified in Val-de-Marne.
Dengue: a first indigenous case in the north of France
The ARS Île-de-France received on October 11, 2023 the report of a case of dengue fever concerning a person residing in Limeil-Brévannes (Val-de-Marne). The organization specifies in its press release that the investigation confirmed that this was the first indigenous case in Île-de-France.
“If indigenous cases have already been identified in mainland France, this is the first case in Île-de-France,” adds the ARS. A case is defined as autochthonous when the patient contracted the infection without having traveled to an endemic area in the 15 days preceding the appearance of symptoms.
The pressure of dengue fever in mainland France seems to be increasing. In 2022, France recorded more cases of indigenous transmissions than during the period 2010-2021 (66 cases against 48).
Dengue fever: two mosquito control campaigns in Val-de-Marne
Faced with this infection, the ARS Île-de-France has taken reinforced vector control measures. Two campaigns of mosquito control have, among other things, been programmed in two localized areas of Limeil-Brévannes: the first took place on the night of Sunday October 15 to Monday October 16, the second is planned for the night of Friday 20 to Saturday 21.
Additionally, the agency advises people in the affected region to protect themselves from bites (wearing loose clothing, mosquito repellent, etc.)particularly in the event of symptoms of dengue fever (high fever, nausea, body aches, fatigue, etc.).
It is also recommended to store anything that may contain water away from the rain. (buckets, watering cans)cover the water reserves tightly or with a mosquito net (barrel, can, swimming pool)clean the gutters regularly in order to limit the breeding and living places for mosquitoes.
