Following in the footsteps of Billie Eilish and Constance Wu, actress Dakota Johnson has revealed that she has suffered from chronic depression since the age of 15.
“The biggest thing I learned about depression is to accept that there is never really an immediate answer and never really an immediate end,” she said at the 17th annual HOPE lunch seminar.
Humor and communication, Dakota Johnson’s two remedies for depression
The star of the film Fifty Shades of grey also revealed on this occasion two tips that she applies on a daily basis to combat her dark thoughts: talking to her partner about her problems and using humor.
“A few weeks ago, I was in a bad situation. My partner then asked me kindly: ‘Are you really in trouble?'” the actress reported, praising her lover’s communicative approach.
“I think most of the time I talk about depression or anxiety with a lot of self-deprecation. Maybe it’s easier to look depression in the eye if I wear the mask of comedy. I don’t don’t think it’s a bad thing. It works. It helps me because sometimes if I don’t laugh I cry“, also explained the 34-year-old actress.
Numerous studies have in fact reported that having regular human contact and exchange can effectively combat depression and even prevent it. Last summer, results of a meta-analysis also indicated that “humor therapy” could also alleviate the symptoms of poor mental health.
What is Dakota Johnson’s chronic depression?
Depression is a mental illness that requires consulting a psychiatrist. Some forms do not respond to antidepressants, therefore falling into the category of “resistant depression” or “chronic depression”.
Characterized depressive disorder affects all ages of life, and concerns approximately 15 to 20% of the general population. It is characterized by the presence of a depressed mood (feeling of sadness and emptiness, irritability), which is sometimes accompanied by a loss of the ability to experience pleasure or interest.
“A depressive episode must be distinguished from ordinary fluctuations in mood. In the case of a depressive episode, the depressed mood is present most of the day, every day and for at least two weeks,” specifies the WHO.
Other symptoms are also present, including:
– difficulty concentrating;
– feelings of excessive guilt or low self-esteem;
– despair about the future;
– suicidal thoughts;
– sleep disorders;
– fluctuations in appetite or weight;
– intense fatigue or loss of energy.
