Forget the stories of left brain or right-brained when it comes to labeling a person’s qualities. The personality is not reducible to the use of one or the other cerebral hemisphere but would rather be the result of complex connections between the two. An American study from Duke University (North Carolina) demystifies this separation of brain functions between the right brain and the left brain by taking the example of creativity. The results published in the journal Bayesian analysis show that the most creative people have more connections between the right and left hemispheres than the less inventive people.
To arrive at these conclusions, statisticians scrutinized the movements of neurons in 68 brain regions of a panel of healthy American students. Their creativitywas evaluated through various tests, in particular giving as many answers as possible to open questions, making as many geometric designs as possible in five minutes, and diverting everyday objects from their primary use. Their achievements in the visual arts, music, writing, dance, cooking and science were also taken into account in a questionnaire.
As a result, the highest creativity scores were given to people who had the most connections between the two cerebral hemispheres.
The analysis of the connections between neurons suggests several therapeutic avenues, in particular in the understanding of comas, Madness, epilepsy or schizophrenia.
