Good news at last ! In France, the health situation is gradually improving: contamination by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is decreasing, hospitalizations are decreasing, and there are fewer and fewer deaths linked to Covid-19. In short, we are on the right track.
But there is a subtlety: in French hospitals, so-called “accessory” Covid patients are multiplying…
Covid “accessory” patients, what does that mean exactly? As a reminder, as soon as a person is admitted to hospital, a Covid-19 test is carried out in order to find out if they are (or not) infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
“Accessory” Covid patients who are between 20 and 39 years old
“Accessory” Covid patients are not hospitalized because of Covid-19: however, the Covid-19 test carried out at the hospital reveals that they are affected by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
“There are two types of Covid patients [à l’hôpital, y compris dans les services de réanimation] : Covid-19 patients and those who come for something else and who have tested positive. They are called accessory Covid patients” summarized Pr. Frédéric Adnet, head of the emergency department at the Avicenne hospital in Bobigny, this Wednesday, February 16, 2022 to our colleagues from RTL.
These “accessory” Covid patients are quite young: thus, in January 2022, around 50% of patients aged 20 to 39 hospitalized for something other than Covid-19 (surgery, serious accident, lung infection unrelated to the coronavirus, etc.) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
