Some people will not be able to get vaccinated against Covid-19 for medical reasons. As a health pass, they can have a certificate of contraindication to vaccination.
- Some people cannot be vaccinated because of medical contraindications.
- They can nevertheless obtain a certificate of contraindication to vaccination which gives them access to all places subject to the health pass.
Currently, more than 44 million people have received at least one dose of vaccine against Covid-19 in France, including more than 37 million who are fully vaccinated according to the Ministry of Solidarity and Health. Nevertheless, some people will never be able to be part of these figures: they have medical contraindications that prevent them from being vaccinated. They will then have a certificate of contraindication to vaccination, which exempts them from a health pass and gives them access to all places subject to the presentation of this QR code. An opinion from the Scientific Council on Covid-19 and the terms of the health pass, published on August 5, estimated that: “the few people with a short-term inability to be vaccinated (1st or 2nd dose) for duly confirmed medical reasons, must be able to benefit from a certificate of temporary contraindication in order not to be penalized for the health pass”. But who is affected?
Being allergic to any component of the vaccine
To obtain the certificate of contraindication to vaccination – which can only be issued by a doctor -, one must meet one of the criteria of the list of contraindications to vaccination. This was published in the Official Journal this Sunday, August 8. The first of the contraindications to vaccination is being allergic to one of the components of the vaccine. However, this must be justified by a certificate issued by an allergist. An allergy to another vaccine or an antibiotic is not sufficient to constitute a contraindication.
Having reacted badly to the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine
Patients who reacted badly to the first dose of vaccine against Covid-19 are also exempt from the health pass. These are, for example, those who have had myocarditis – an infection of the heart muscle – or Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. For the health problem to be recognized as a side effect at the first dose, a multidisciplinary medical consultation must validate it. On the other hand, people who have already had episodes of capillary leak syndrome, which is a very rare blood disease, can also obtain a certificate of contraindication to vaccination. This is also the case, but temporarily, for individuals treated with monoclonal antibodies against Covid-19 and those who have suffered myocarditis or pericarditis – inflammation of the pericardium, the thin membrane around the heart – before vaccination against the coronavirus. Nevertheless, these last two health problems must be considered to be always evolving. Finally, children with pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (PIMS) after Covid-19 infection can also benefit from the contraindication certificate. This syndrome is manifested by redness in the eyes, high fever or even digestive signs.
Being pregnant is not a contraindication to vaccination
Finally, being pregnant is not a contraindication to vaccination, quite the contrary. Since July 20, expectant mothers can be administered both doses from the first month of pregnancy. That day, the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, assured during a session of questions to the government in the National Assembly that there was no no contraindication to messenger RNA vaccine, “including pregnancy in the first trimester“. Before this date, they already had priority for being vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna serums, but only from the second trimester of pregnancy.
