In a column published in the “Journal du Dimanche”, 6 doctors call for private gatherings to be avoided “as much as possible” to stem the progression of the Covid-19 epidemic.
- 6 doctors call for individual responsibility by limiting family and friend gatherings, considered to be major vectors of Covid-19 contamination.
- Their call comes as France has once again exceeded the threshold of 10,000 contaminations per day on Saturday September 12.
It’s necessary “whistle the end of recess”. It is in these unequivocal terms that six doctors, including the president of the League against cancer Axel Kahn, the head of the intensive care unit at the Lariboisière hospital Bruno Megarbane, or the infectious disease specialist at the Raymond- Poincaré Anne-Claude Crémieux, call for limiting family or friend gatherings in a column published in the JDD.
While France has just exceeded the bar of 10,000 cases of Covid-19 recorded in 24 hours on Saturday, avoid “as much as possible” private gatherings would, according to the signatories of the forum, limit the progression of the epidemic. “The virus is circulating faster and faster. Finally, we are the ones who are circulating it because it does not have the power to move on its own. We are at a new stage in the epidemic: that of its diffusion. We we are gradually losing track of new contaminations. There is probably little time left to act collectively”the signatory doctors are alarmed, recalling that “the indicators are deteriorating and we don’t know how far it will go”.
A call to everyone’s responsibility
Without wanting to fall “the injunction”doctors therefore call for everyone’s responsibility by limiting meetings in the private setting as much as possible. “We understand that after a difficult week, you want to enjoy your loved ones over the weekend. Unfortunately, it is in these situations that you are at risk of either contracting the virus or spreading it, because one of the puzzling characteristics of the Sars-CoV-2 is the large part of asymptomatic and contagious people. As the epidemic progresses, the probability of being infected in these closed places increases”they write.
“The smaller a room, the more people it contains, the less airy it is, and the more you increase the risks, remind health professionals. Reduce the number of people present in the private setting. If possible, postpone any meeting. Otherwise , wear a mask, like at work. Without forgetting the distance. These simple situations of daily life are at risk. There is still time to act, all together.
The epidemic is progressing
This call to limit private gatherings comes after the speech of Prime Minister Jean Castex who unveiled on Friday September 11 the measures taken by the defense council to fight against the epidemic rebound. Among these, the strengthening of screening circuits, the recruitment of 2,000 agents dedicated to the policy of tracing contact cases or even the reduction of the duration of isolation of contact cases from 14 to 7 days.
According to the latest figures released by Public Health France, 10,561 new positive cases were recorded on Saturday September 12, against 9,406 new cases the day before. 28 new patients were admitted to intensive care and 17 people died in hospital in 24 hours.
