“A metanalysis involving 26 studies and which included nearly 8,500 patients showed that people with cardiovascular disease (coronary disease, stroke) or cardiovascular risk factors (high blood pressure, diabetes) before being affected by Covid-19 had a risk of mortality multiplied by two compared to those with no cardiovascular history “affirms Prof. Ariel Cohen, head of the cardiology department of the Hospitals of the East of Paris and president of the French Society of Cardiology.
A doubling of sudden deaths in Paris
While in Ile-de-France, more than 60% of resuscitation beds are now occupied by Covid patients, the cardiologist sounds the alarm and recalls that, during the first wave, “there was a doubling of sudden deaths in Greater Paris “.
In an open letter entitled “To your good heart”, the president of the French Society of Cardiology calls for better consideration of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases “and therefore their treatment and prevention”, this period of infection with Covid-19.
The meta-analysis shows that coronary artery disease increases the risk of death by 1.90 times, that cardiovascular disease increases this risk by up to 2.03 times. And that hypertension, cerebrovascular disease and diabetes increase the risk of death 1.73 times, 1.76 times and 1.59 times, respectively.
