While the cases of Covid-19 are progressing in France, patients hospitalized in intensive care for Covid-19 are occupying more and more beds (3,849 on March 8). The situation is particularly monitored in Ile-de-France. So, to take care of the sick as well as possible, a measure to postpone non-urgent operations was requested this Sunday, according to information from AFP.
The directive was given by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) from Ile-de-France from deprogram 40% of hospital and clinic activities.
“Although there are different situations, we find ourselves having difficulties in caring for the sick known during the other waves. We are no longer in alert mode but in maximum tension mode with the prospect that at next week we exceed the ceiling of patients known in wave 2”, writes Aurélien Rousseau (ARS) in a message sent Sunday to hospital officials in Ile-de-France. The director of the ARS, plans “a particularly difficult fortnight.”
The confinement of Ile-de-France is however “not topical”, said this Tuesday, March 9, Jérôme Salomon at the microphone of RTL. “It would be a last resort solution” if “the hospital could not hold out”, explains the Director General of Health.
Why are non-emergency operations deprogrammed?
This measure is included in the “white plane“, reactivated in all regions mid-February. Its objective is to allow hospital resources to be better focused on the coronavirus. This decision concerns “surgical interventions with post-operative resuscitation”. It is more precisely aboutoperations requiring general anesthesia. This frees up recovery rooms, resuscitation beds and staff.
Which non-emergency operations are concerned?
These are interventions of the type: hip or knee prosthesis, bariatric surgeryfor example.
Patients will be informed of the deprogramming, then later of the new date of intervention. On the other hand, surgical procedures on which the immediate health of patients depends will be maintained.
