American researchers have developed the FITGuard, a smart mouth guard capable of detecting concussions and shock-related risks and reporting them.
Thanks to an LED system attached to the front of the mouthguard, this new invention lights up blue in the event of a low-risk impact, but turns red if the blow received is greater, signaling that the athlete has 50 % chance of suffering a concussion.
Too many athletes do not take into account the dangers of even slight shocks. Mostly and even after a violent blow, athletes tend to return to the field. Yet even mild concussions can have consequences long term on the brain and affect memory, balance, eyesight and emotions.
Concussions weaken the brain
In a study published by the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society in August 2013, scientists revealed that “people who have been concussed will show less mental endurance and tire more quickly during prolonged stress”.
Receiving another blow, even a light one, immediately after a shock can have critical cerebral consequences, even deadly.
“This mouthguard will allow parents and coaches to follow the usual protocol in the event of a concussion while having quantitative data to support their conclusions”, explains Anthony Gonzales, the co-developer of this product in a video. “We want to provide them with tools to make informed decisions about athlete safety and reduce the traumatic effects of brain injuries.”
According to figures from the Institute of Health and Medical Research, the emergency services of French hospitals receive more than 100,000 victims of head trauma, 90% of which are considered mild. But light does not necessarily mean benign.
