- The patient shares her story on TikTok to spread the word about cancer.
Last September, Devlynn Cyr, a 38-year-old Canadian, who suffered from constipation as well as chronic pain and inflammation in the intestines, returned to the hospital to undergo several operations to relieve her. But the intervention did not go as well foreseen. When she woke up, the 30-year-old discovered that surgeons had been forced to remove her uterus to save her life.
Colon Cancer : her doctors performed a hysterectomy on her emergency
To relieve her digestive problems, the young woman, who lives in the Canadian province of Alberta, had to have a colectomy (the removal of part of the large intestine) as well as a stoma. (a opening created in the colon or small intestine appearing at the abdomen to pass stool). She explains in a TikTok video with more than 1.5 million views that during surgery doctors discovered stage 3 colon cancer.
She told the magazine People : “My husband gets a phone call halfway through surgery saying: Here’s the problem. We found a tumor and it’s cemented to the uterus.” And PTo remove the baseball-sized malignant tumor, they were required to perform a hysterectomy.
Her husband, also interviewed by the magazine, admitted that he feared that Devlynn “be mad at me and mad at me for having to make this decision. We had talked about having children”. But, there were no other solutions to save his wife’s life. Furthermore, the cancer had already strongly affected her fallopian tubes and her uterus, and therefore compromised her fertility.
Hysterectomy: she can no longer have children biological
The Canadian remembers the announcement she received when she woke up. “All of a sudden my husband sits on the bed and he says to me ‘Ie I have to tell you something’, and my heart sank. He said : I had to make a decision, they gave you a hysterectomy and you don’t have an ostomy bag.”
Hearing the word hysterectomy, questions flooded into her mind. Devlynn: “I no longer have the possibility of having children?”, “Have they recovered eggs so I can have children in the future?” . Unfortunately, doctors were unable to preserve them. Devlynn can no longer have biological children. This new reality was difficult for her to accept, especially since she had suffered a miscarriage a few months earlier.
Cancer and fertility: she shares her story to open the dialogue
Nevertheless, Devlynn did not want to let despair prevail. She fights against the disease and shares her story on the social network TikTok to spread the word about cancer and fertility. She doesn’t shy away from sharing the brutal realities of cancer such as the uncontrollable bowel movements that can accompany its treatment.
“Some people say to themselves: Why are you posting this? We don’t want to know about your poop on the floor that your husband had to pick up […]. And I answer: But this is the reality of a caregiver supporting a loved one who has had this type of surgery.”she explains to the American magazine. However, criticism remains few. “A lot of people say to me:thank you, that’s exactly what I felt. I was scared. Now I know I don’t need to be.”
The thirty-year-old concludes: “No one is alone. I really hope people find comfort in seeing that we are working to overcome this situation. It’s okay to not be okay sometimes.”
