According to a study, men who drink two to three cups of coffee a day are less likely to experience erectile dysfunction. A benefit not found in diabetics.
Coffee to optimize your sex life? Caffeine consumption is indeed associated with a lower risk of erectile dysfunction, suggest researchers from theUniversity of Texas Health Science Center in Houston (Texas).
In their study published in the journal PLOS ONE, scientists reveal that men who consume amounts of caffeine equivalent to two to three cups of coffee per day are less likely to be affected by erectile dysfunction. Thus, consuming between 85 and 170 milligrams of caffeine per day would reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction by 42%.
Those who drank between 171 and 303 milligrams of caffeine per day were 39% less likely to experience sexual breakdown compared to those who drank little or no coffee.
The obese and hypertensive too
More interestingly, this association was found in overweight, obese and hypertensive men, but not in those with diabetes. “This is not surprising because this condition is one of the most important risk factors for erectile dysfunction,” said David Lopez, the study’s lead author.
To explain the link between coffee and erection, the American team suggests that caffeine triggers a series of biological phenomena that lead to the relaxation of helicine arteries and smooth muscles of the cavernous bodies of the penis, thus increasing blood flow in the penis.
As a reminder, in the United States, 18.4% of men aged 20 and over have erectile dysfunction, which suggests that more than 18 million men are affected. The good news is that caffeine is consumed by over 85% of adult Americans, according to a previous study. It remains to be seen whether the more than 2 million French victims of an erectile dysfunction drink as much coffee …
