In the current Citroën range, the Space Tourer name evokes large and family vehicles. A Chilean designer has projected himself into the future with a tribute to the SM evoking the journey in space-time which redefines the name Space Tourer.
Chilean designer Carlos Munoz Mardones, a graduate of Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, reflected on the future of the Citroën brand. Called Space Tourer, his project takes us to the far reaches of the galaxy in a creative whirlwind that redefines the contours of the brand’s herringbone design while paying homage to the SM.
Longer than the Citroën Metropolis
Due to its length of 5.80 m, its vehicle is very imposing. Indeed, it is 50 cm more than the already spectacular Citroën Metropolis concept car from 2010, masterfully designed at the time by a certain Matthias Hossann who has been in charge of the Peugeot brand’s style since 2020. Count a width of 2.40 m for only 1.39 m under the board. A fairly low stature which is not to displease us at the time of the SUV at all. Polished like a pebble, the hull of the car is translucent in the upper part and also relies on transparency at the ends.
A process reminiscent of the glass grille of the Citroën SM from the 1970s. While below, the staging of the double chevron is more reminiscent of the Citroën Traction Avant. In order not to pollute the lines of the sedan or compromise its aerodynamics, miniaturized cameras have been installed on the front fenders. Among his research sketches, Carlos Munoz Mardones explored the streamlined front wheel track, which echoes the partially concealed rear wheels of the Citroën SM.
But they were not retained on the final version. Among the other works of the Chilean designer, an Alfa Romeo Montreal project and a large Peugeot sedan called Presence 605, which would be the elongated alter ego of the Peugeot e-Legend coupe, also caught our attention.

Citroën SM: the timeless inspiration
This five-seater sedan is both elegant and statutory in the end like the Citroëns of yesteryear without falling into the caricature of the Citroën 19-19 concept car stuck on wheels a tad too large. On their side, the designers of DS, the Premium brand of the Stellantis group, had also taken on the challenge of resuscitating the SM and modestly on our side at Largus.fr we too had tried to sketch a SM of the 21e century. Proof that more than forty years after its appearance, the Citroën SM still inspires designers.
