Generally speaking, drinking alcohol is harmful to the skin. However, some drinks are more toxic than others, such as red wine.
Dr. Isabel Sharkar, naturopath in the United States, recently detailed on the site popsugar how alcohol affects the skin and which alcoholic beverages are slightly less harmful than others. Here is its ranking, from the least toxic product to the most toxic.
1/ Vodka, gin, tequila, beer
Clear distilled spirits (vodka, gin, and tequila) and beer are the least harmful alcohols for the skin.
2/ Whiskey and rum
Clear liquors like pure rum and whiskey contribute to developing early signs of skin aging.
3/ White wine
Consuming white wine can lead to skin swelling and bloating.
4/ Cocktails
Drinking cocktails can cause acne breakouts, dull or yellowish discoloration of the skin, and swelling. The worst cocktail for the skin is the margarita.
5/ Red wine
Red wine is the most harmful alcoholic beverage for the skin, especially in the presence of a skin condition such as rosacea (permanent dilation of blood vessels that gives the skin a reddened appearance and, in some cases, causes irritation, appearance of pimples as well as dry and rough patches, editor’s note). Drinking it can cause redness and spots to appear on the skin.
Note however that red wine remains, notwithstanding its harmful effects on the skin, the least harmful alcohol for health. Consumed in small amounts, it can even have positive effects, such as reduction of erectile dysfunction or even theimproved cardiovascular health and sleep. If despite all these indications, you have still drunk a few glasses too much, Dr. Isabel Sharkar indicates that you should drink 10 glasses of water the next day and consume vitamin C. To maintain beautiful skin despite an excess of alcohol, it is also recommended to clean it well and moisturize it twice as much as usual.
