Inhale smoke cannabiseven accidentally for a tiny minute can temporarily affect the functioning of blood vessels, according to a new study in rodents by Professor Matthew Springer, professor of medicine at the University of California (USA).
After inhaling ventilator-produced cannabis smoke, rats’ blood vessels took three times longer to return to normal function than when exposed to tobacco smoke. And since the functioning of the vessels is the same in humans and in rats, researchers believe human vessels would react the same if they were exposed to cannabis smoke.
THC is said to have effects on the blood circulation
According to the researchers, it is likely one of the compounds of marijuana, THC, which is responsible for these harmful effects on blood flow.
Further research is needed to determine if similar effects could be observed in humans. But researchers know that when a person’s blood flow is compromised due to exposure to tobacco or cannabis smoke, the risk of a heart attack or stroke temporarily increases.
The study was published in the Journal of american heart association.
