The #nomakupselfie hashtag created a buzz on social media, generating £ 2million for cancer research in the UK.
The generosity of Internet users has hit the mark again: no less than 59,000 selfies have been taken in two days against cancer in the United Kingdom. Launched on March 18 by Cancer Research UK, the #nomakeupselfie movement has created a buzz on social networks Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
This “telethon” of social networks, in addition to being transformed into a global movement, has helped to raise awareness against cancer.
Two hashtags have been talked about: #nomakeupselfie and #beatcancer. Both started by Cancer Research UK, then theIrish Cancer Society, they combine self-portrait and donation for research. Donors take pictures of themselves without makeup to encourage their contacts to participate in the movement with a simple text message which donated £ 3 to the association. Bet succeeded since in 48 hours, the hashtag generated more than two million pounds in the United Kingdom. “It was absolutely amazing, we cannot thank enough the hundreds of thousands of generous people who have given over a million pounds,” says Telegraph Carolan Davidge, communications director of Cancer Research UK.
The movement was aimed mainly at women, but men took to the game with humor: they launched the #makeupselfie (makeup selfie). They wear makeup – most often in a comic way – to support cancer research.
