Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: can a herbal mixture harm water tablets?
I would like to know if I can also use a herbal mixture with the hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg? I am still retaining too much fluid. I also take 160 mg of valsartan.
Answer:
Hydrochlorothiazide is a ‘weak-acting’ water tablet. It is mainly used to lower blood pressure. Most of the time you don’t even notice that you have to pee more often. That’s just nice. The 12.5 mg dose you are taking is low. That is also beneficial. If this does not work, you can be given another blood pressure medicine, such as valsartan, as has happened to you. By combining blood pressure drugs, the effect is stronger, while the dosage remains low. As a result, you suffer less from side effects. For the treatment of high blood pressure, this is the ideal approach. Against retaining too much fluid, for example in the legs, other measures are needed. It is better to discuss this with the doctor before you start working with herbal mixtures.
Also send in your medicine question. That’s possible here.
