The info was revealed by the Parisian. A patient at the radiotherapy center of the Créteil hospital center underwent 22 ray sessionson the wrong breast. It is the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), supervisory in the matter, which revealed this dysfunction last week, by publishing a “notice of incidence”, following the report of the hospital on November 12th. .
This patient, with cognitive impairment, was unable to speak and say “you are on the wrong side”. It was her partner who was alerted, discovering redness on his wife’s unaffected breast. “It is a combination of elements that led to this error, justifies Professor Housset, head of the special cancer center. The patient presented unsuspected cognitive disorders and had no tumor syndrome on the breast”.
As soon as a new protocol was put in place, and fortunately, the patient did not suffer from any sequelae. “She continues to be followed in our home and has kept her trust in us”, assures Professor Housset.
Following this incident, the Créteil Hospital Center took new measures: from now on, the medical file will be available at all stages of the patient’s care. In addition, caregivers will systematically consult those around the patient when the latter has communication problems.
