A cocktail of around thirty vitamins and minerals compensates for the loss of neurons and improves certain cognitive capacities.
A cocktail of dietary supplements, this is what could help treatments against neurodegenerative diseases. Scientists from McMaster University in Canada have just demonstrated that a formula composed of 30 vitamins and minerals would delay cerebral aging in mice and even improve certain cognitive properties. The study was published in the journal Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis.
The formula developed by the researchers contains vitamins B, C, D, folic acid, green tea extracts and cod liver oil.
Stabilization of cognitive functions
The experiments were carried out on genetically modified rodents. The mutation induced by the scientists produced in mice a generalized loss of nearly half of the neurons in their brain, which would resemble a very severe form of Alzheimer’s disease in humans.
The researchers added the cocktail of dietary supplements to conventional food for several months. They were able to observe a stabilization of cognitive and motor functions. The formula made it possible to gradually compensate for the loss of neurons and to restore certain capacities such as vision, smell and balance.
“Our hope is that this cocktail of dietary supplements can fight very serious diseases and improve the quality of life of patients,” said McMaster University biology scientist and study author Jennifer Lemon.
Indeed, the basic cellular mechanisms that contribute to neurodegeneration in mice are the same as those in humans. The formula will be tested in humans within the next two years.
