On the occasion of the 12th edition of the Bone Marrow Donation Week, theBiomedicine Agency launches a campaign to attract men and donors from diverse backgrounds.
A lack of man in the list of donors
The Agency recalls that “to date, however, men represent only 35% of donors registered in the French register of bone marrow donors”. But to offer a larger panel of donors and succeed in responding more broadly to demand, it is necessary to recruit more young men, especially men under the age of 40, and to diversify the geographical origins of new registrants to rebalance the register.
“Cells from bone marrow harvested from male donors are immunologically better tolerated by patients. The chances of a successful transplant are therefore higher. The explanation is that men’s bone marrow is not exposed to the antibodies that a woman can potentially develop during pregnancy. pregnancy. Thus tolerance is better, ”explains Jacques Olivier Bay, from the Regional Center for Hemophilia CHU de Clermont-Ferrand.
“There are too few men to get involved. We absolutely must sensitize them and encourage them to become a bone marrow donor, ”recalls Dr. Evelyne Marry, from the Hematopoietic stem cell transplant department.
A gift that is neither painful nor risky
Bone marrow donation can take place in two ways, or by puncture or by tri-cell. Whatever the modus operandi, the donor is fully supported and all costs will be reimbursed. The choice of intervention is up to the transplant doctor who decides after analyzing the needs of his patient.
As the bone marrow regenerates very quickly, a donor does not take any risk for his health. “Bone marrow donation is always done with the safety of the donor in mind,” recalls Dr. Marry. “From the moment, when a compatibility between a donor and a patient has been established, the Life Watch takes a medical check-up and blood tests to organize a safe sample”.
To know everything about the terms and to pre-register, future donors must go to the site, http://www.dondemoelleosseuse.fr / and make an appointment for the first medical interview and blood test.
