The competition for medical interns seems cursed. Its new version has been at the heart of a controversy for two years in a row. During the 2017 vintage of national classifying tests (ECNi), the students received an unpleasant surprise. This June 22, they will have to spend half a day on the floor behind their table.
Among the subjects presented on June 19, one was too close to those used as a test the previous year, according to the Ministry of Higher Education. For the second time, medical interns will therefore have to pass the examination of progressive clinical files. A total of 8,450 candidates are affected by this decision. And there are many who feel that they have been wronged.
“This additional penalty imposed on students is not justifiable under any pretext,” denounces the National Association of Medical Students of France (Anemf) in a press release. Other angry students have started a petition on MyOpinions.com. The text, which calls for the cancellation of the test, has already collected more than 3,000 signatures.
No questioning
In fact, the shock is severe for the interns. ECNi are a stressful time as grades weigh heavily on the choice of specialties and assignments for the next few years. But beyond the individual aspect, many students denounce a lack of respect on the part of the organizers of the event.
In medical school, a third of those registered suffer from psychological distress, recalls Anemf. The association calls for a questioning of the system and measures to avoid this type of redundancy between the different promotions.
