Have you ever heard of birch sap? Hyper-popular on forums and social networks, this product extracted directly from the tree between March and April, is said to have draining and diuretic, depurative and energizing properties.
Naturopaths thus recommend birch sap against skin problems (acne, eczema), against urinary disorders, against rheumatism, against cellulite, against mood changes… Not to mention the “detox cure” based on of birch sap, recommended at each change of season.
The health benefits of birch are recognized by health authorities
While there are few serious and independent scientific studies on the issue, birch sap is believed to contain many minerals and trace elements – magnesium, lithium, calcium, phosphorus and selenium, in particular. The virtues of birch are also recognized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Commission of the German Ministry of Health and the European Scientific Cooperation in Phytotherapy (ESCOP).
In addition to its precious sap, birch is also the source of other products also used in naturopathy: birch juice (obtained by decoction of the leaves), birch infusion (anti-inflammatory, diuretic and draining) or even birch bud macerate (used in gemmotherapy in particular to accompany the treatment of kidney failure).
Warning ! “Natural” does not mean “without risk to health”. Although birch sap is usually considered to be devoid of toxicity, certain precautions for use are necessary – ask your doctor for advice before you start!
