In Béziers, a couple of pharmacists is suspected of having taken part in the trafficking of drugs classified as narcotics, to the tune of 300,000 euros. The trafficking is said to involve Subutex, a heroin substitution treatment, and Skenan, a powerful analgesic containing morphine, used in cancer-related pain.
This Monday, five people were taken into custody, including the couple and three customers suspected of being dealer-wholesalers. At the end of the procedure, the pharmacists were indicted, according to legal sources cited by AFP, confirming a information revealed by RTL.
The CPAM has sounded the alert
The man will have to answer for “fraud aggravated to the detriment of the primary health insurance fund of Hérault”, and “delivery of narcotics on the basis of fictitious or convenience prescriptions”, as well as ” supply and sale of narcotic products ”. The woman was indicted for “concealment of property (money) from an aggravated fraud offense”. The couple were placed under judicial supervision.
It was the Hérault primary health insurance fund (CPAM) which gave the signal, observing an abnormal sale of these two drugs. She was particularly surprised at the purchase by an insured of 750 boxes of Skenan.
10,500 capsules
The investigation was opened in May. According to his findings, almost all the drugs, or 10,500 capsules, had been purchased from the same pharmacy. Irregularities were discovered, such as the replacement of prescriptions by prospectuses. The pharmacists’ homes were searched. Investigators got their hands on 360,000 euros in cash, hidden in different places.
A year earlier, the Federation of Pharmacists of Hérault had already been alerted by the same CPAM of too large a sale of Skenan in Béziers. According to the president of this federation, pharmacies in Béziers had called for greater vigilance on this drug.
