Bariatric surgery is offered for people suffering from obesity. It allows to lose weight in a sustainable way, to reduce the affections related to obesity and to improve the quality of life of the patients, according to the High Authority for Health (HAS). Bariatric surgery: 70% of adults have excess skin after weight loss
In addition, the operation can cause difficulties related to the modification of the body image. In a publication by The Conversation, three researchers from the University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO) mentioned excess skin, which is caused by massive weight loss. Excess skin after this surgery is a common reality. And for good reason, it occurs in 70% of patients. Yet it is often overlooked in discussions of bariatric surgery, as excess skin is associated with psychological, physiological and functional consequences.
Shame, skin problems, reduced mobility…
In a studyconducted among 124 adults who had undergone bariatric surgery, the volunteers said they were embarrassed by “the real or supposed judgment of others”. They also expressed body dissatisfaction, self-esteem issues, shame and disgust. Another reported problem: skin disorders, such as irritation, fungus, sores and itching, which can lead to bad odors. In addition, this excess skin can reduce mobility and limit daily activities.
Excess skin: “the embarrassment can be higher in the summer”
“Participants explained that the discomfort caused by excess skin can be more or less severe depending on where it is located on the body. This seems especially true when excess skin is visible, such as on the arms. moreover, the discomfort caused by the excess skin can evolve according to the events or the situations experienced. For example, the embarrassment can be higher in the summer, during which time the body is more exposed to the gazes of others”, explained the researchers.
How to better manage the difficulties related to excess skin?
According to the authors, it would not be possible to prevent the appearance of excess skin, even with the practice of physical activity. Thus, to manage this problem, patients can opt for loose and comfortable clothing and adopt good hygiene to reduce the risk of wounds and infections. “Washing and drying excess skin regularly is essential. Also, using powders (such as cornstarch) helps absorb moisture and using tight clothing around the thighs can help reduce friction.” The support of loved ones also plays a role in the acceptance of excess skin. Furthermore, reconstructive surgery can also help improve the body image, self-esteem and sexual well-being of patients.
