I am a 76 year old male with benign prostatic hyperplasia. That’s why I’ve been using Combodart for a few years now. Because of the side effects of this drug (I have less libido and almost no more ejaculations) I switched to Avodart, but it doesn’t seem much better. What can I try now?
Combodart is a combination drug. It contains dutasteride and tamsulosin. Dutasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone into the more potent dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is a substance that stimulates the growth of the prostate, but also promotes sex drive.

It is therefore possible that your libido suffers. Tamsulosin is a so-called alpha blocker, which relaxes smooth muscle cells in the bladder neck and prostate. This makes urination easier. The drug Avodart only contains dutasteride, but that is precisely the ‘guilty half’ of the combination. You really only want to use tamsulosin. Its brand name is Omnic; it is also available as an unbranded preparation. It is best to discuss this with your treating doctor.
