A producer of the display of the iPhone 13 is said to have been caught cheating by Apple and is now probably missing out on billions.
It looks like one of the world’s largest display manufacturers Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE, don’t scare) is missing out on a huge deal with Apple. The company would have secretly changed things on the screen for the iPhone 13 without it apple was aware of this.
Apple will let iPhone 14 display be made elsewhere
The OLED manufacturer is currently waiting for approval for an immense batch of iPhone 14 screens, but Apple does not seem to agree, according to The Elec† That has to do with the tampering with displays for the iPhone 13, the medium reports
What exactly happened? According to those involved, BOE was caught ‘adjusting the circuit width of the transistors’ in iPhone 13 screens. The company is said to have done this to increase the yields of the production process. But that’s not what Apple asked for.
You’re probably wondering (and rightly so) how BOE could have imagined that Apple wouldn’t find out. All absurd limitations aside, Apple is usually exceptionally careful with the composition of their smartphones.
It’s no surprise, however, that BOE felt cornered. Currently, many industries are still feeling the pain of the pandemic and the global chip shortage. Yields from production processes must be good because of the scarcity. And the reality of tech production is that not all parts always meet the quality requirements.
That’s now costing the Apple display maker a deal of reportedly 30 million screens! It is unknown how much the deal would be worth. But since a smartphone screen quickly costs about 60 dollars, this will probably soon be billions of dollars.
