Corentin, an 11-year-old Metz resident, died after complications that arose while undergoing appendicitis surgery. His parents filed a complaint against X.
The banal intervention turned into a drama. Corentin, 11, died while undergoing appendicitis surgery, at the Claude-Bernard clinic in Metz (Moselle). The Lorraine Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the Metz prosecutor’s office have launched an investigation.
On October 31, little Corentin was admitted to the hospital. Her appendectomy is scheduled for the next day. Complications prolong the intervention by several hours, according to his parents’ lawyer, Me Marc Baerthelé. Complications ultimately lead to the death of the child, whose funeral took place on November 8.
The parents of the young Metzois have filed a complaint against X for manslaughter. “Errors or mistakes must have been made in Metz, and the investigation must say which”, told AFP the lawyer of the family. “Parents want to understand how by going to the operating room for a relatively trivial appendicitis intervention, you end up not leaving the operating room, with an affected aorta, and the liver too. “
It is true that the operation for appendicitis is a common operation, which consists in removing the ileocecal appendix. In the case of Corentin, it was performed under laparoscopy, that is to say that no major incision was made. Three 5 mm incisions are made. Gas is then blown into the abdominal cavity, and the appendix is withdrawn through these openings. 83,400 such procedures were performed in 2012 and complications are rare.
The ARS of Lorraine has announced that a medico-administrative investigation, the results of which will be communicated to the courts, has been launched. The Metz prosecutor’s office is also investigating the circumstances of the death. For his part, the director of the clinic, Cyril Dufourq, promised in a press release that his establishment would do “all transparency on the facts. “All the medical and paramedical skills of the Hôpital Clinique Claude-Bernard were mobilized urgently on the day of the incident,” commented the clinic.
