Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: anti-fungal mouthwash?
Six months ago I was treated by the oral surgeon. After that I suffered from a fungal infection in the mouth. The oral surgeon recommended a tongue scraper, but that does not help enough. Is there an antifungal mouthwash?
Answer:
Yes, there certainly is. Usually the infection, also called thrush, is caused by the Candida yeast. This is a yeast that occurs naturally in the mouth. An infection can occur if the resistance is reduced or if medicines are used (such as antibiotics after treatment by a dental surgeon). You will then see white spots on the tongue, the inside of the cheeks and the palate. It causes few complaints and often goes away on its own. If the infection is extensive or causing a lot of discomfort, the doctor may prescribe miconazole oral gel. Please note: you should not use this medicine if you are taking the anticoagulant medicines acenocoumarol or phenprocoumon.
